Your household's gross income must be under 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI). "Area" refers to where you'll use the voucher, not where you live now. If your household has more family members (including children), the income limit for Section 8 increases.
If you are qualified for preferences, it will reduce your wait time for assistance. These preferences often include the elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, and local residents.
3. Disqualifiers
The housing authority can disqualify you if you have a criminal record, provided false information, or have past rent arrears. Make sure your application is accurate and complete.
