About This Building

Springdale House is a single-family style rambler featuring common activity areas and six private bedroom suites, each with bath. Its energy efficient design permits low maintenance and is completely accessible for persons with disabilities. It has a sprinkler system throughout that is linked to a 24-hour monitoring system. Springdale House operates as a family style cooperative.
Amenities: Beautifully furnished and equipped, central A/C, carpeting, laundry room, hook-ups for private cable TV and phone service, sun room and patio, and limited storage space in attic. Shared space is plentiful and individual suites offer privacy.
The Concept: Unrelated adults live together in a cooperative family style setting. They share household tasks and enjoy companionship. With the support of qualified professionals and volunteers, they hold regular meetings to determine house rules and to establish interpersonal relationships. Residents are independent low-income elderly clients or clients with disabilities. This property is owned outright, with no debt owed. With no on-site paid staff, and budget relief from volunteers performing maintenance, minimal rents cover monthly operating expenses.
History: The property was purchased by Wesley Housing for $12,280 (the amount of outstanding debt) from the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) in December 1984. Dilapidated structures and abandoned vehicles were removed. Fairfax County approved a special exception in July 1985 to permit a group home type dwelling. Contributions from Fairfax County and Northern Virginia businesses enabled construction to start in April 1988.
