Coppermine Place is in the heart of Herndon, with easy access to I-66 and the Capital Beltway.

The community features 22 fully accessible apartments, including wheelchair-accessible kitchens with lower countertops and bathrooms with roll-in showers.

History:

in november 1999, fairfax county dhcd invited accessible space, inc. (ASI), St Paul, MN to visit Fairfax County to partner with a local nonprofit to build a Section 811 rental development for persons with physical disabilities.

ASI is the largest sponsor of Section 811 housing in the nation.

Wesley Housing agreed to co-sponsor a development in Fairfax County with ASI.

Support was sought for the development from Supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins, and the McNair Farms Community.

Both endorsed the development.

A Coppermine Steering Committee and Disability Housing Advocates of Northern Virginia formed to guide the development and develop the supportive services plan.

Many community partners made Coppermine Place a reality, including:

Accessible Space, Inc.; City of Falls Church; Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development; Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority; U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; Charles P. Johnson & associates, inc.; hamel builders, inc.; williams mullen; and zemaitis & associates architects. Fairfax County Supervisor Catherine Hudgins (Hunter Mill District) and the McNair Farms community, where the building is located, were early supporters of the project. In 2006, Coppermine Place I was awarded the Coalition for Housing Opportunities in the Community for Everyone's (CHOICE) Accessible Design Award.

Residents submitted that application on Wesley Housing's behalf. In presenting the award to then Wesley Housing CEO Al Smuzynski, CHOICE President, Jeannie Cummins said, Coppermine has opened doors to new housing opportunities for people with disabilities and enabled residents to have not only a home, but a life.
