Wilson County, North Carolina Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List

The Wilson Housing Authority (WHA) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed. Applications were last accepted from February 8, 2021 until February 24, 2021. There is no notice of when this waiting list will reopen.

There were two ways to apply during the opening period:

1. Print the online paper application.
2. Pick up an application from the WHA drop box located outside of the housing authority’s administrative office, or one of the WHA housing Partners.

Once the application was completed, it was either:

1. Dropped off at the WHA drop box.
2. Postmarked by February 24, 2021 and mailed to the Wilson Housing Authority.
3. Emailed to the WHA.
4. Faxed to the WHA.

This waiting list had the following preferences:

• First Priority:
  • Involuntarily Displaced Persons – Applicants displaced by natural disaster declared by the President of the United States, through no fault of their own by a government action, permanently displaced by fire or who have been displaced by actions taken by the WHA will be placed at the top of the WHA’s waiting list.
• Second Priority: 
  • Veterans – An applicant who has actively served in the US military and has been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable will be placed at the top of the WHA’s waiting list behind only Involuntarily Displaced Persons. 
  • Homeless Families with Case Management Support – An applicant who meets one of the following criteria and who will be receiving regular on-site case management support from a local homeless services, social services or mental health agency for at least one year after moving into a voucher-assisted unit will be placed at the top of the WHA’s waiting list behind only Involuntarily Displaced Persons. The agency providing the case management services will be required to verify the homeless status of the individual or family and its commitment to continue providing those case management services for at least one year following move in prior to the WHA accepting the application under this preference. 
    • Individuals and families who for the last 90 days or more have been living in a place no meant for human habitation, in an emergency shelter, in transitional housing, or is exiting an institution where they temporarily resided (up to 90 days) if they were in a shelter or place not meant for human habitation before entering the institution. 
    • Unaccompanied youth and families with children and youth who are defined as homeless under other federal statutes who do not otherwise qualify as homeless under the definition above. 
  • Homeless Victims of Domestic Violence: Individuals and families who are fleeing, or are attempting to flee, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, or other dangerous or life-threatening conditions that relate to violence against the individual or a family member will be placed at the top of the WHA’s waiting list behind only Involuntarily Displaced Persons if that individual or family is residing in a domestic violence shelter or transitional housing program as a result of that domestic violence. The domestic violence shelter or transitional housing program will be asked to verify the status of the individual or family prior to the WHA accepting the application under this preference.

250 applicants were placed on the waiting list by random lottery, weighed by order of preferences.
